Sales of Powabyke’s electric tricycle soar after magazine feature

Powabyke’s unique electric battery powered tricycle – the Powatryke Cruiser – has seen a dramatic spike in sales this September in response to a feature in Saga magazine, which has a senior 50+ reader profile and a readership in excess of a million. The relatively small editorial feature sparked a flurry of phone calls in the Powabyke HQ based in Bath, with callers requesting to know where to purchase the electric tricycle in their regional area.
Over 100 enquiries from around the UK have been fielded to date in response to the Saga article and IBDs stocking the battery powered three-wheeler have been contacted by Powabyke directly to connect each enquiring customer with the nearest dealer with the trike in stock.
MD of Powabyke, Nick Child said: “The demand has rocketed for the tricycle since the feature was published in the ever popular Saga magazine. Every day since the September issue of the publication was distributed people have been phoning the office and we have been passing on each lead to the relevant IBD, which has the Powatryke readily available and the enquiry to sale conversion rate has been very impressive.”
Powabyke, also responsible for the X-range of electric bikes put in a lot of design-time into the tricycle making it as accessible as possible for those with difficulties moving their legs. The key features are a very low step-through cross-section in the frame so the rider only need raise their leg six inches off the ground to mount the trike, and a long range of 30 miles per charge to ensure a good distance can be covered during a single trip. The trike also reaches speeds of 15mph via a throttle control on the handlebars.
“The IBD’s appear to have made a favourable impression on the readers of Saga magazine and we are very pleased with the result,” added Nick Child.

Powabyke and Evans Cycles team up for exclusive offer through Saga

Electric bike company Powabyke EV are forging a unique promotional deal with Evans Cycles, the popular chain of bicycle shops in the UK which will be made available to Saga online’s 70,000 registered users and 40,000 Saga newsletter readers.

A voucher has been designed so that Saga’s readers can download it from the Saga online website in September this year. By presenting the voucher at an Evans Cycles shop on purchase of any one of Powabyke’s electric bikes the customer will be allowed to choose £50 worth of cycling accessories from the shop floor totally free before they leave!

The Powabyke range includes the X-6 (six gear), X-24 (24 gear), XLS (low step through frame) and the Powatryke Cruiser – the electric tricycle complete with shopping basket! All the bikes achieve speeds of 15mph and have detachable batteries which can be recharged at the mains socket in the house.

On a single charge all the bikes in the Powabyke range can go on their own power via throttle control for several miles – should you want to commute effortlessly to work, go shopping without breaking a sweat or if you simply fancy going out for a ride in the country to get some fresh air.

Nick Child, MD of Powabyke said: “Saga is a leading brand in its market and Evans Cycles have a network of shops that stock our range of electric bikes – so this promotion for fifty pounds worth of free bike accessories on the purchase of one of our bikes was making the most of a set of good working relationships in order to give our new customers something extra with real value.”

The offer will remain valid until 1 November, 2011 and is limited to the first 200 bikes purchased with the special promotional voucher. Also featured in an editorial feature in the September issue of Saga magazine is the Powatryke Cruiser electric tricycle. Saga magazine has a readership of 1.5 million people.

Powabyke collects two top awards from Able magazine at the Mobility Roadshow

The UKs longest running mobility show, The Mobility Roadshow in Peterborough on 30 June – 2 July, proved to be a great success for Powabyke EV who had an exhibitor stand at the event. Not only were many bikes and Powatryke Cruisers ordered from the stand, Able magazine tested the range at the show and gave Powabyke not one but two awards after riding and inspecting the bikes thoroughly in the Cyclefest bike testing area.

Able magazine, one of the few ABC audited disability magazines (circ. 32,000) on the market carried out their prestigious Product Rating Awards at the show and found two models of Powabykes’ vehicles on offer of a superior quality earning the bikes a four star award and a five star award – the top award possible.

It was the renowned Powabyke XLS (step through) that bagged a five star product award, the highest accolade, backing up the unprecedented demand it has achieved this year by selling out twice, and the Powatryke Cruiser was given a four star product award for its unique qualities as a pre-mobility vehicle – designed for those with limited use of their legs.

Powabyke MD Nick Child said, “We are very proud to receive these two product awards from Able magazine. We think the Powatryke Cruiser is a unique vehicle and deserves the recognition and for the XLS to receive the five star award shows just why this is our most popular product and has shown exceptional demand this year in terms of orders.”

The XLS, the best selling product from the Powabyke stable, is a sleek silver alloy bike with a low step through frame for easy access, six speed Shimano gears and a range of 10-20 miles on battery power depending how you use it. The six speed Powatryke Cruiser is a unique design with a step-through clearance of an ultra low six inches from the ground so as not to tax the legs for those with limited mobility. The bike has a shopping basket, is throttle controlled and comes with a choice of Lead Acid or Lithium Ion battery. It has a range of up to 30 miles on battery power.

Powabyke appoint Elmonet BV as Dutch Distributor

Metroelectric (The Company) is pleased to announce that Powabyke EV Ltd. its wholly owned subsidiary has signed a distribution agreement with Elmonet B.V. to represent Powabyke throughout the Netherlands.

The agreement will run for a minimum of one year and gives Elmonet B.V. exclusive distribution rights within the Netherlands. The agreement is renewable annually subject to achieving minimum agreed sales.

Elmonet distributes a range of electric vehicles in the Netherlands including cars, vans, scooters and now with the new partnership with Powabyke, electric bikes.

Powabyke MD, Nick Child commented: “Elmonet have put a lot of thought into their approach and strategy for selling Powabykes and for maintaining the reputation of the brand which we have established over a long period of time. The Netherlands is the perfect territory for e-bikes to thrive in . Elmonet is part of the 1bn euro Autobink group and we are both impressed with their operation and flattered that they chose the Powabyke range of e-bike to distribute’’

’When Powabykes begin to appear on the streets in the country they will get noticed and I have every reason to believe that Elmonet will go from success to sucess with every order.”

Richard Knoop, General Manager of Elmonet B.V. commented on the new partnership: “If you look at the current Dutch market we are selling 150,000 electric bikes a year in the Netherlands and so the number has increased to a huge degree in the last few years. Whilst the Netherlands is a small country, in cities, working locations are close together so that offers the opportunity to use the electric bike for travelling to work, across town and for getting back home. Powabyke has proven itself in the last ten years and the bikes are reliable, look stylish, competitive, and you can change the parts between different models, so in terms of after sales the product is very simple and cost effective.”

Powabyke’s after-sales strategy of setting up an online portal for spare parts through the Powashop will be mimicked closely by Elmonet’s operation so that accessories and replacement parts are easy to purchase via the internet.

Knoop explains: “In terms of a business model we are now developing a new website for Elmonet that will launch at the end of May including the ‘webshop’ that is connected to 10-15 after-sales outlets in the Netherlands. Dealers will also be able to order through that website and of course the dealer will get a discount. We are expecting to handle a sizeable volume of orders through this online ‘webshop’.”

The X-Byke range, including the X-6, X-24 and XLS models were recently redeveloped as the Mk2 range with several improvements and a degree of restyling. These models, which reach speeds of 15 mph and can travel up to 20 miles on a single charge, are proving popular around the world after Powabyke have gathered momentum distributing in European territories and recently a deal was struck for distribution in the USA that will ensure Powabyke is internationally renowned and the company continues to search for new opportunities for overseas distribution.

Powabyke breaks into the USA

Metroelectric (The Company) is pleased to announce that Powabyke EV Ltd. its wholly owned subsidiary has signed a distribution agreement with The Brandsco PLC to represent Powabyke in the United States of America (USA).

The agreement will run for an initial fifteen years and gives The Brandsco PLC exclusive distribution rights within the USA. The agreement includes an immediate, up front exclusivity fee of £100,000 for the rights. The agreement is subject to The Brandsco PLC achieving minimum agreed sales.

Marcus Cassidy, CEO of The Brandsco PLC commented, “Extensive research has convinced us that Powabyke will be well received in the USA. We are delighted to represent the Powabyke brand and the new xbyke clearly represents exceptional value for money. Powabyke will stand out amongst the current electric bike offerings and we intend to emphasise the British theme by introducing the Union Flag to the branding.”

Powabyke are well established in the UK with a network of approximately 400 dealers and over 30,000 electric bikes sold. The company is looking for distribution options throughout the world to continue growth.

Greg Collier, Metroelectric Chairman commented, “It is encouraging that The Brandsco PLC has presented the strength of their international marketing connections in both the UK and the USA, has committed a substantial premium to back their confidence in Powabyke”.

Nick Child, Powabyke MD said of the partnership, “I am obviously delighted to secure such a key territory for Powabyke”. Last year we presented at the Las Vegas Show and the American public and trade loved our new xbykes. Electric bikes are increasing in popularity worldwide and particularly in USA as oil prices continue to rise and people look at alternative means of transport. There is a massive opportunity for Powabyke in USA and we are confident The Brandsco PLC will achieve success there”.

Electric Vehicles – Distribution Agreement

Metroelectric Plc (“Metroelectric” or the “Company) a leader in the manufacture and distribution of electric bicycles and other electric personal transport, is pleased to announce that it has entered into an initial three year exclusive, agreement with Wonder EV Company to distribute its electric cars in the UK and Eire. Wonder EV Company is part of China based Wonder Group which through its subsidiary, the AIM listed China Wonder, is a significant shareholder in Metroelectric.

The first model currently known as the Wonder EV is a contemporary designed two seater, capable of 50 mph and a range of up to 120 miles between charges from a standard domestic socket. It has successfully undergone in house crash testing and the process of EC homologation is currently underway. The agreement was formed at the Beijing EV motor show last week, where the Wonder EV production model was unveiled for the first time.

The Company hopes to receive marketing demonstrator vehicles in the UK by the end of this summer and retail stock by January 2011. The Wonder EV will be competitively priced, with leasing options making it an attractive proposition as a second car to any household. At the signing ceremony, filmed by Chinese TV, The Wonder Group also exhibited a four door, five seater electric taxi and an electric coach.

Greg Collier, Chief Executive, Metroelectric, commented:
“We are currently the UK leader in electric bikes via our Powabyke brand which has achieved sales momentum allowing us to focus on a widening of operations into other forms of electric transport which we view as being an area of substantial potential growth. Electric vehicles are exempt from many vehicle related charges such as parking in a growing number of boroughs, congestion charges and road tax. Other personal savings are found in the forms of reduced car insurance due to the low risk classifications and income tax allowances from ownership of such vehicles. This is in addition to the ecological benefits of zero emissions at source.

At the show we also provisionally agreed terms with The Wonder Group to represent the Powabyke brand (wholly owned by Metroelectric) in China, and to also assist us to find partners in other Asian countries. The Wonder Group is a respected company in China and recognised as a major supplier to the worldwide automobile industry.

We are excited that a company of their stature will help build the Powabyke brand in a country with a rapidly expanding economy and population estimated at 1.4 billion. The Wonder group will manufacture, under license, the stock for the Chinese market.

We expect to make a further announcement on the completion of this agreement soon.”

Maiden Profit Announced

Powabyke LogoFurther to the Interim Results announcement made earlier today, the Company is delighted to publish a trading statement for the period 1st July 2009 up to 31st March 2010. Total sales for the period of £195,663 resulted in a trading profit for the first time since the Company’s inception.

Sales of the Powabyke range are increasing and the Company’s growing status at the forefront of eco-friendly
